I am the faculty advisor for the university of michigan's aquaponics club. So I get to see a lot of struggles as the students try to do these projects in their spare time between classes. I think decoupled systems are the way to go. Use the water from fish tanks like fertilizer, and just replace it with fresh. Solves a lot of water chemistry problems, less work, more fish and veggies.
